The Balmain Bug is the generic name given to the iconic racing skiffs found on Sydney Harbour from the 1880’s to the 1930’s. With small hulls but carrying an enormous area of sail, these vessels became synonymous with the Sydney yachting scene. Crowds would gather to watch the spectacle and place bets on the outcome. Their diminutive offspring were initially made by the same Sydney shipwrights that made the full sized boats. They were raced in Centennial park and in the quieter western reaches of the harbour and were the pond yacht of choice for generations of keen sailors.
The typical ‘Bug’ typically had an Australian red cedar hull, and a very deep sliding keel to cater for tricky wind conditions. Like their larger kin, the models carried generous areas of sail, giving them a very lively performance, much appreciated by their fans. Each boat was usually named and carried identification on their main sail and was a one off original rather than the kitted modern radio- controlled yachts that appeared after the 1950’s. These small Balmain Bugs are now among the most desirable of maritime collectables and demand high prices in the most renowned auction houses.
Odyssey Collectables offers a quality handmade replica, complete with Australian red cedar carved hull, Tasmanian Huon pine deck, brass fittings and handsewn sails – along with a timber stand to show off this most impressive display model. Your Balmain Bug is delivered complete, but with the bowsprit un-stepped, simply to minimise the packaging size. The perfect nautical gift for avid collectors of maritime memorabilia.
